About the game
Pocket Aquarium puts a small reef tank in your pocket. You start in your room and walk through a short tutorial, then take charge of the tank: the fish need food, the water needs to be kept clean, and a dirty tank pulls down the fish's happiness. At the start the game gives you five days' worth of food, and the days count up as you play.
You point at things with a hand cursor. Clicking a fish opens its profile, which shows its picture, how happy it is and a few facts about the real animal, such as the clownfish that greets you first. Each fish also has a game attached to it that you can play to cheer it up and learn more, and the project holds several minigames, among them Angelfish Vengeance, a prickly pufferfish ascent, a blue tang hideaway, sea horse racing and a clownfish big top. A save slot keeps your aquarium between sessions.
No sound effects in this version
The authors' repository states that the sound effects are not covered by the game's GPL licence and belong to their owners, so we cannot publish them. The version served here is built without any sound effects. The music, which the authors composed themselves, is still there.
Playing it here
This is a homebrew game made for the Game Boy Color: a new game by independent developers, not a commercial release. It runs here in binjgb, a Game Boy emulator written in C and compiled to WebAssembly. Click Play now, press Enter on the title screen and choose Play. F2 saves the emulator state in this browser and F4 brings it back; the game also has its own save slots.

A few things worth knowing
Watch the food. You start with five days of food, so look at the supplies before you run out.
Keep the tank clean. A dirty tank makes your fish unhappy, and the profile screen shows how each one is doing.
Use the tutorial. The title menu has a Tutorial entry as well as Load Game and New Game; take it once to learn the controls.
Credits and licence
Pocket Aquarium is by Chris and Tyler Jackson of Creative Name Studios, who made the code and the music, and was entered in the GB Compo 2025 game jam. It was made in GB Studio and the authors released it under the GNU General Public License version 3 or later. The sound effects, which they credit to a third-party pack, are excluded from that licence and were removed here. The authors' repository holds only the project, so the ROM served here was built from it with GB Studio 4.1.3 and a small change that makes the build reproducible. Because the licence is a copyleft one, the exact source and the build scripts are hosted next to the ROM, and the full licence text is linked from this page.
