About the game

You have just graduated from the Portal Wizard Academy, and on graduation day a cabal of evil wizards uses the legendary Wand of Nerual to shatter the world into separate pockets of space. As a freshly minted portal wizard you can open, close, pick up and move the gateways that connect those pockets, and that is your only real talent. You skipped the day they taught fighting.

So this is a roguelike where you do not fight your way through. You walk, you push and shove, you drink coffee, and you use portals: a portal you are holding can be set down somewhere else, and when it lands it realigns at both ends, sometimes in a way that lets you bypass a wall, a monster or a lake. The goal is to reach the Inner Sanctum of the wizards and take the wand.

Each pocket of the world has its own character. The first one you see might be a green jungle, the next a cold expanse where the message log warns you it is very cold here, with water, ice and the dangers that come with them. Items often have effects that are not the obvious ones: the good coffee, for example, is very, very hot, and the manual's advice is to try melting glaciers if you get stuck.

It is a turn-based game written in a week, with no images or sound: everything is text characters in a terminal-style display, and the world is generated afresh every time you play.

A few things worth knowing

Drop a portal to change the map. A portal realigns when you put it down, so carrying one to the other side of an obstacle is often the way through.

Experiment with items. Some of them do things that make sense only once you have seen them work; try them where a mistake will not hurt.

Do not rely on fighting. You are a wizard with a wand of portals, not a warrior; avoiding trouble is part of the plan.
