About the game

RHDE is a head-to-head strategy game about interior decorating, and about wrecking the other player's interior decorating. Two houses face each other across a road. Each round has three timed phases, and the player whose house scores better at the end of the round wins it. The first to win five rounds wins the game.

In the furnish phase you spend rent money on furniture and arrange it. Rooms that can be reached through a door earn rent; furniture earns points, and matching sets (a kitchen with fridge, oven and trash can, for example) earn more. Some items do more than look nice: beds give you more people to command, a bat lets them fight, and missile silos fire at the other house.

In the battle phase you steer up to three people, blast holes in your rival's walls and carry their furniture back across the road. In the build phase you patch the damage with falling wall pieces and add new rooms before the next round begins.

Playing it here

This game needs two players. There is no computer opponent. Share the keyboard, or connect two gamepads.

This is a homebrew game made for the NES: a new game by independent developers, not a commercial release. It runs here in jsnes, an NES emulator written in JavaScript. Click Play now and press Enter on the title screen. Each player picks one of three races, then player 1 presses Start to begin.

F2 saves the current state of the game in this browser and F4 brings it back.

A few things worth knowing

Doors are money. Only rooms reachable through a door from outside pay rent, so a sealed room is wasted space. Add doors after the build phase.

Buy beds early. Each bed (up to three) gives you one more person in the battle phase, which means more furniture stolen and more defenders at home.

Furniture likes company. Bookcases, plants and flowers score a bonus next to walls, and complete sets score more than the same pieces scattered around.

Walk, then turn. The author warns that path-finding is simple: let your person reach a doorway before sending them through it.
