About the game

RuggRogue is a roguelike that you can finish. You start in a room on the first level of a dungeon with a few points of attack and defense, and every level below has new monsters and new equipment to find. You gain experience and levels by fighting, you get hungry and must eat, you heal slowly over time, and a menu with hot keys lets you use, drop, wield and wear what you carry without hunting through a long list.

The game was written by Tung Nguyen after the first part of the Rust Roguelike Tutorial, but it uses SDL2 directly and no game engine. It has a few comforts that make a long run pleasant: auto-run to follow corridors and cross open space, a view mode that lets you move a cursor and read about distant tiles, a save and load system, graphical tiles or plain text, adjustable zoom, and a New Game Plus mode for when you win.

Playing it here

Click Play and the game loads in the page (about 1 MB, downloaded only when you press the button). Choose New Game, press Enter to pass the first screen, and play. The game saves when you go down the stairs and when you quit from the options menu (Esc), and "Load Game" on the title screen brings the run back. Clearing the site data erases the save. The page makes no requests outside this site. The map is small at first; open the options with Esc and set the map zoom to 2x. A keyboard is needed.

Tips

Eat before you are starving. The Hunger line in the side panel tells you how you are doing.

Use the corridors. Fighting in a corridor means meeting monsters one at a time.

Look before you leap. The view mode describes monsters and items that you can see from afar.

Try the tiles and zoom. The options let you choose between the graphical tiles and a text font, and zoom the map and the text.

FAQ

Is it hard? It is a classic roguelike: it is fair, but you can die. The first levels are easy to learn on.

Can I save? The game saves when you descend and when you quit from the options menu; load from the title screen.

Does it work on a phone? No: it needs a keyboard.

Credits and licence

RuggRogue was made by Tung Nguyen and is free software under the MIT licence. The tile graphics are a mono version of the Urizen 1-Bit Tilesets by vurmux (CC0, public domain dedication), and the font is GohuFont (WTFPL). The game is built with the Rust language and the libraries SDL2 and SDL2_image, compiled to WebAssembly with Emscripten; their licences, and those of the Rust crates, are in the licence file linked from this page. We compile the game from the author's source with one removal (a third tileset that came without a licence) and a small change to the HTML, and host that source and the changes next to the game.
