About the game
A salmon is swimming upstream, and it is very proud of how much it knows. The one thing it cannot do is maths. Luckily it can summon things from another dimension, and that dimension is full of sticks.
Each level shows a wrong equation built out of sticks, in the style of a seven-segment display: for example 5 + 3 = 9. You fix it the way matchstick puzzles always work, by changing the sticks. You have a limited number of summons, which add a stick wherever one is missing, and on some levels a limited number of banishes, which take a stick away. Turn the 9 into an 8 with one summon and the sum is right; later levels need several moves, a plus that becomes a minus, or a sum that has to be changed in two places at once.
The salmon comments on everything with a straight face, which is most of the charm. It was made in 48 hours for Ludum Dare 55 (theme: "Summoning") and has nine levels, which take about ten minutes to play through.
Playing it here
Click Play and wait for the game to load (about 9 MB, downloaded only when you press the button), then choose Start. The first level begins with a short conversation with the salmon: click to move through each line. The game is played with the mouse, and the Settings button has volume controls.
The original game has a few more sounds than this version: see the credits.
Controls
| Input | Action |
|---|---|
| Left mouse button on an empty stick position | summon a stick there |
| Left mouse button on a stick (when banishes are left) | banish that stick |
| R | restart the level |
| Restart / Settings / Quit buttons | the same, from the screen |
Tips
Think in segments. Every digit is made of seven possible sticks. Adding one stick turns a 5 into a 6 or a 9 into an 8; removing one turns an 8 into a 9, a 6 or a 0.
Count the moves. The counter at the top left shows the summons (and banishes) left. If the equation is not right when you use the last one, press R and try a different idea.
Do not forget the signs. The plus sign is also made of sticks, so it can turn into a minus, and the equals sign can be changed too.
FAQ
Do I have to be good at maths? Only at small sums. Every level can be solved by looking at which digits are one stick away from each other.
Does it save my progress? The game restarts from the first level when you reload the page.
Is it free to share? Yes, the game is under the MIT licence.
Credits and licence
Salmoning was made by Eugene Begunkov (woonaftl) for Ludum Dare 55 and is released under the MIT licence. The font is Press Start 2P by Cody "CodeMan38" Boisclair, under the SIL Open Font License 1.1. It runs on Godot Engine, under the MIT licence (this build is exported with Godot 4.4.1; the game was made with 4.2).
The credits of the original entry also thank freesound.org for ambient sounds under CC0, without saying which files. Because those files cannot be traced, four of the seven sounds were left out of this version (the water ambience, the duck quack, the bubbling of the dialogue and the victory jingle) and the line of the credits screen that mentioned them was removed. The three remaining sounds (the click and the summon and banish effects) are the author's. The licence texts, the notices of the libraries inside the Godot engine and the source of this build are linked from this page.
