About the game

You are a small orange seahorse, and the way to the moon is full of things that want to stop you. Seahorse Adventures is an old-school side-scrolling platformer in the style of the 8-bit consoles: the pixels are big, the music is cheerful and the levels are packed with parrots, frogs, robots, fire guys and pandas.

Your weapon is a stream of bubbles. Shoot an enemy enough times and it gets trapped in a bubble that floats upward, and then you can jump on it and ride it to reach platforms you could not jump to. Power-ups make your bubbles stronger, so that enemies need fewer shots. The levels come in three worlds, jungle, volcano and moon, with a boss waiting at the end.

The game was made in a week by a team of friends for the PyWeek 4 contest in 2007 (as "Barbie Seahorse Adventures", a title we dropped), and it has since been kept alive by the free software community.

Playing it here

The first time you click Play the page downloads the Python runtime and the pygame library (about 23 MB), which takes a few seconds; after that a "click to start" message appears, and one more click opens the title screen. The download is kept by your browser, so the other pygame games on the site open faster. Nothing is loaded from other sites. The game does not save anything: each visit starts from the first level.

The title screen lets you play from the beginning, choose the world and level you want to try ("select"), read the help and the credits, or "quit", which just brings you back to the title on a web page.

A few things worth knowing

Enemies take three shots. Unless you are powered up, a single bubble does not trap an enemy. Keep firing, and keep moving while you do.

Ride the bubbles. A trapped enemy floats up and you can stand on its bubble. It is the way to reach the high platforms and some of the hidden places.

Learn the patterns. Parrots and platforms turn at fixed points, and the fire guys do not always go where you expect. Watch one cycle before you cross.

Frequently asked questions

Does it save my progress? No. There is no save in the game, and it starts at the first level each time.

Does it work on a phone? It needs a keyboard, so it is meant for a computer.

Why does the title not say what it used to? The original title picture used a doll maker's trademark, so we took it out; the game itself is unchanged.

Is it free? Yes. The game is free software, under the GPL.
