About the game

Shadow Runner is a one-button-and-a-half race against time. A small creature of shadow, with nothing visible but its two eyes, runs to the right without ever stopping, past mountains, trees and fences that scroll by in several layers. Your job is only to keep it alive.

Rocks on the ground have to be jumped, and birds flying at head height have to be ducked under. Each hit takes a chunk out of the life bar at the bottom of the screen, but the real enemy is the clock: the bar empties by itself all the time, and faster as the score climbs. When it runs low, hearts start floating across the top of the screen. Jump into one and the bar fills up again, with 500 bonus points.

The score counts up as long as you keep running, so every run is an attempt at your own record.

Playing it here

This is a homebrew game made for the Arduboy, the open, credit-card-sized handheld with a tiny black-and-white screen: a new game by independent developers, not a commercial release. It runs here in Ardens, an Arduboy emulator. Click Play now, choose PLAY on the title menu and the run begins. SOUND switches the sound effects on and off.

F2 saves the complete state of the game at any moment and F4 brings it back. A gamepad works too. The HELP screen is empty in this build (it used to show a QR code pointing to the team's old website, now gone), so the controls are below.

Controls

Key Arduboy button Action
X B jump
Z or Left A duck
Up, Down or Right D-pad pause (Z or X carries on)
F2 / F4 — save / load the state

A few things worth knowing

Rocks hurt more than birds. Running into a rock costs twice as much life as a bird does, so if you must take a hit, take the bird.

You can't duck in the air. A jump has to finish before you can duck again, so don't jump at a rock when a bird is close behind it.

Hearts appear only when you need them. They show up once the bar is below half, and they fly high: jump to catch them.

Credits and licence

Shadow Runner was made by TEAM a.r.g., credited to JO3RI and Trodoss, first for the Gamby and then for the Arduboy, with thanks to Dreamer3 for the conversion and to MLXXXp for moving it to the Arduboy2 library. It is free software under the MIT licence, and it uses the Arduboy2 (BSD) and ArduboyTones (MIT) libraries by Scott Allen. The team has since disbanded; its games are kept by the Team-ARG-Museum archive on GitHub. The version here is built by us from the archive's source code, which is linked from this page with the licence texts.
