About the game
Shikken is a quiet strategy game about preparing a coast for an invasion. The Mongol fleet is coming, and you command the defenders of the Hojo clan. You do not move soldiers one by one. You lay out roads, raise buildings at the crossroads and decide what the people who live there should be doing: cutting wood, farming rice, carrying goods, praying at the shrines or keeping watch.
The map is a field of soft colours with thin roads, little circles for buildings and tiny coloured dots for the people walking between them. Each building takes some resources in, needs workers to turn them into something else and can be switched on and off to set priorities. Carriers matter as much as producers, because a farm that cannot get its rice to a shrine does nothing for you.
A clock at the top counts down to the next landing. Raiders will keep coming until you build up enough prayer, and then the divine wind, the kamikaze, can be called. Call it twice and the Khan gives up.
Luke Nickerson made Shikken for js13kGames 2023, where the whole game had to fit in 13 KB and the theme was the 13th century.
Playing it here
Click Play, then drag the screen to the left to leave the title page and look at the map. Drag the background to look around. Tap a node or a building to see what it does and what it costs, then use Upgrade or Expand at the bottom. The Jobs button lists your workers by colour and lets you move them between tasks. The game is not saved, so a session lasts until you win, lose or leave the page.

A few things worth knowing
Carriers come first. A shortage of someone to move goods is the usual reason that a chain of buildings stalls.
Switch buildings off to set priorities. Turning one off leaves its resources for the places that need them more.
Prayer wins the war. The kamikaze button appears once your shrines have gathered enough, so build rice farms and shrines before the raiders get close.
