About the game
Sirène is a side-scrolling shooter set under the sea. You are a mermaid, and the ocean is full of things that want you gone: schools of small fish, bigger fish that take more hits, jellyfish drifting up from below and octopuses that squirt ink at you. The screen keeps moving, and you swim freely around it, dodging and firing at whatever comes from the right.
The game has nine stages, each made of waves of enemies, and every third one ends with a boss: a shark, a seahorse that fires back, and finally a pirate ship that throws skulls at you. Between the waves, power-ups float by. Four of them change your weapon: the trident you start with, a rapid stream of bubbles, three shells fired in a fan, and a slow magic blast that you charge by holding the button and that goes through everything in its path. Others give you a shield, a heart back or bonus points.
You have three hearts at the start, and the gauge holds four. Lose them all and the game shows your score and sends you back to the title.
Playing it here
This is a homebrew game made for the Arduboy, the open, credit-card-sized handheld with a tiny black-and-white screen: a new game by independent developers, not a commercial release. It runs here in Ardens, an Arduboy emulator. Click Play now and choose PLAY on the title menu.
The game does not keep scores between sessions; only the sound setting is stored, in the emulated memory of the Arduboy that this browser keeps automatically. F2 saves the complete state of the game at any moment, and F4 brings it back, which is handy before a boss. A gamepad works too.
This build comes from the Team-ARG-Museum archive, which removed a QR code that pointed to the team's old website, now gone. That code was all the HELP screen showed, so HELP is now empty: the controls are below.
Controls
| Key | Arduboy button | Action |

| Arrow keys | D-pad | swim |
| X | B | fire (tap, hold or charge, depending on the weapon); choose in menus |

A few things worth knowing
Pick your weapon. Grabbing a weapon power-up replaces the one you carry. The bubbles are best against swarms of small fish, the shells cover the top and bottom of the screen, and the magic blast hits hard but needs time to charge.
Stay away from the right edge. Enemies enter from the right, and some of them shoot back. Keeping to the left half gives you time to see their shots coming.
Bosses take patience. The shark, the seahorse and the pirate ship each take dozens of hits. Learn how they move first, and fire when they cross your line.
Credits and licence
Sirène was made in 2016 by TEAM a.r.g., with idea and art by Justin Cyr and code by JO3RI, and with thanks to MLXXXp for moving it to the Arduboy2 library. It is free software under the MIT licence. It uses the Arduboy2 (BSD) and ArduboyTones (MIT) libraries by Scott Allen. The licence texts are linked from this page. The team has since disbanded, and its games and source code are kept by the Team-ARG-Museum archive on GitHub.
