About the game

Squash the Creeps is a small arcade game in a square arena with four red pillars at the corners. You play a round, one-eyed character on the floor. Blue creeps with a single red eye drop in from the edges of the arena and drift across it in straight lines, each at its own speed, and your job is simple: stay alive and turn as many of them as you can into points.

You score by jumping on a creep. The jump is short and has a little weight, and landing on a creep from above squashes it, gives you one point and throws you back into the air with a bounce, which is often the start of your next stomp. Touching a creep any other way ends the run, and the screen offers a quick retry. Because the creeps keep coming, the arena fills up, and the game turns into a rhythm of dodging, lining up a jump and hopping from one head to the next.

It is a tiny game on purpose. It was made as the finished version of the official tutorial "Your first 3D game" of the Godot engine, and it shows how little it takes to get a complete loop in 3D: a character that moves and jumps, enemies that spawn at random, a score and a retry screen. The 3D models, the lighting and the soft shadows make it look better than its size suggests.

Playing it here

Click Play and wait for the page to load (about 12 MB, downloaded only when you press the button). The game starts right away. Move with WASD or the arrow keys and jump with Space or the right mouse button; a gamepad also works if your browser sees it. When a creep gets you, press Space or Enter to try again. Nothing is saved: the score is only for the current run.

Controls

Input Action
W / A / S / D or arrow keys move on the floor
Space or right mouse button jump
Space or Enter, after losing retry
Gamepad left stick, A / Cross move, jump

Tips

Jump on purpose. A stomp only counts if you come down on the creep from above. Aim for its head, not for where it is when you press the key: creeps keep moving while you are in the air.

Chain the bounces. After a stomp you bounce up, so you often have time to turn and land on a second creep before you touch the floor.

Stay near the middle. The pillars in the corners are not safe spots, and creeps come in from everywhere. In the middle you can go in any direction.

Wait for gaps. Creeps move in straight lines. Step out of a line, let it pass, and jump on the creep behind it.

FAQ

Is it saved? No. The score only lasts as long as the tab is open and the run is going.

Does it work on a phone? No. The game was made for a keyboard (or a gamepad); there are no touch controls.

Is it really free to share? Yes. The project is free software under the MIT licence, and the music and the font are under licences that allow sharing, both listed below.
