About the game

Stallar is a short side-scrolling platformer made for Ludum Dare 50, a game jam whose theme was "Delay the Inevitable". It plays like a classic run-and-jump game: hop across platforms, collect stars for points, bounce on the blob enemies and keep away from spikes and bottomless pits.

The joke is in how the level is built, and it is better discovered than explained. Pay attention to the end of the first stretch, and to what the game says when you do something it did not expect.

Playing it here

This is a homebrew game made for the NES: a new game by an independent developer, not a commercial release. It runs here in jsnes, an NES emulator written in JavaScript. Click Play now and press Enter on the title screen.

F2 saves the current state of the game in this browser and F4 brings it back. A gamepad also works.

Controls

Key NES button Action
Left / Right Control Pad run
X A jump (hold for a higher jump); advance the messages
Enter Start start the game, start again after a game over
F2 / F4 — save / load the state

A few things worth knowing

There is no going back. The screen only scrolls forward, so anything you leave behind is gone.

Stomp, do not touch. Landing on top of a blob defeats it and bounces you up; running into one, or into spikes, costs you the game.

Stars are the score. Your final score is the number of stars you picked up.
