About the game

Stellar Impact is a classic horizontal shoot-'em-up. Your little ship flies to the right across a field of stars that is generated as you go, and waves of enemy ships come at you from the right edge of the screen. Small fighters go down in one shot, medium ones take more, big ones soak up a lot of fire, and all of them shoot back. Every minute or so a boss the height of the screen arrives and fills the air with long beams.

You start with three lives and three bombs. A bomb doesn't blow anything up: it stops time for everything except you for a couple of seconds, so you can slip out of a tight spot or line up shots at enemies frozen in place. Destroyed ships sometimes drop a heart or a bomb, which you collect by flying into them.

Each enemy is worth points, from one for a small fighter to a hundred for the boss, and your best score is saved for the next time you play.

Playing it here

This is a homebrew game made for the Arduboy, the open, credit-card-sized handheld with a tiny black-and-white screen: a new game by an independent developer, not a commercial release. It runs here in Ardens, an Arduboy emulator. Click Play now and press X or Z on the title screen to start.

The high score is stored in the emulated memory of the Arduboy, which is kept in this browser automatically. F2 saves the complete state of the game at any moment and F4 brings it back. A gamepad works too.

Controls

Key Arduboy button Action
Arrow keys D-pad fly
X B fire
Z A bomb: stop time
All four arrows D-pad pause
Down (title or pause) D-pad sound on / off
F2 / F4 — save / load the state

A few things worth knowing

Your gun is slow. There is a pause between shots, so aim each one instead of holding the button down and hoping.

Save bombs for the boss. Its beams cover a lot of the screen; stopping time lets you move through the gap and keep shooting.

Pausing takes all four arrows. Most keyboards let you press them together; if yours doesn't, F2 saves the moment and F4 brings it back later.

Credits and licence

Stellar Impact was made in 2018 by Athene Allen (gnargle) and released under the MIT licence. It was written for the original Arduboy library (BSD), whose sound code comes from Len Shustek's arduino-playtune under the GNU GPL version 3, so the program as served here is covered by the GPL as a whole. The version here is built by us from the author's source code; that source, the library, the Arduino core and our build script are linked from this page together with the licence texts.
