About the game
StickFighter is a fighting game for the Arduboy, a credit-card-sized handheld with a 128 by 64 black-and-white screen, and it fits in the 32 KB of the little console. The fighters are stick figures, but not drawn frame by frame: each one is a skeleton of bones whose angles are blended between poses, so the punches, kicks and ducks flow smoothly at 60 frames per second, and a camera zooms in and out as the two fighters get closer or farther apart.
You choose one of ten fighters, which differ in the length of their limbs, their walking speed and their faces, and then climb a ladder of opponents. Each opponent is the computer, and as you move up the ladder it gets more aggressive and reacts faster. Win two rounds to move on to the next one.
Playing it here
Click Play. The game starts on its title screen; press Z to start, choose a fighter with the left and right arrows and confirm with Z. The Arduboy has six buttons, which here are the four arrow keys plus Z (A) and X (B). The game state can be saved with F2 and loaded with F4.
Controls
| Key | Action |
|---|---|
| Left / Right | walk (hold away from the opponent to block) |
| Up | jump |
| Down | duck |
| Z (A) | punch: fast and short, 8 damage |
| X (B) | kick: slower and longer, 12 damage |
| Down, forward + Z | fireball, costs half of the special meter |
| F2 / F4 | save / load the state |
Tips
Block by holding back. Holding the arrow away from your opponent blocks and cuts the damage to a fifth, but it also fills the opponent's special meter.
Parry with forward. Tap forward just before a hit lands and the attacker is stunned for a moment while you gain a quarter of the special meter.
Fill the meter. The special meter grows when you deal damage, take damage or parry. At half it pays for a fireball, a 25 damage shot that punishes anyone who retreats from you.
Duck under the punches. Ducking lowers your body, so high attacks miss, and your own attacks change into low ones.
