About the game

T8NKS is an artillery duel. Your tank sits on the left of the screen, an enemy tank on the right, and a chunk of scenery stands in between. You take turns firing shells at each other in high arcs, and the first clean hit wins the round.

Aiming works with a small cross near your tank. Move it up and the shot climbs more steeply; move it further out and the shot leaves with more force. Gravity pulls every shell back down, and a wind gauge at the top right, with an arrow and a strength, pushes it sideways. The wind changes from level to level, so every map needs a fresh guess. Each blast bites a hole out of the ground, so a ridge that blocks your first shot may not survive the third.

Besides the regular shell, which never runs out, you carry a few special ones: a shell that splits into five at the top of its arc, and a heavy one with a much bigger blast. The top left corner shows which one is loaded and how many are left. Shells that bounce off the edges of the screen before landing earn extra points, and so does finishing a level with a single shot.

Playing it here

T8NKS is a CHIP-8 program. CHIP-8 is a simple virtual machine from 1977, created for hobby computers like the COSMAC VIP, and people still write new games for it. This one targets XO-CHIP, a modern extension with extra colours, more memory and better sound, and was made for Octojam 2, the second edition of a yearly CHIP-8 game jam. It runs here in the Octo emulator, with the speed and colours chosen for it in the archive.

Click Play, press any key on the title, and any key again to open the menu. Campaign runs through the levels in order with three spare tanks, a running score and the odd bonus shell between rounds. Free play lets you pick any level you have already unlocked, with a full stock of every shell. Use W or S to move between the two and E to confirm. F2 saves the state of the emulator at any moment and F4 brings it back. A gamepad works too: the D-pad aims and A fires.

A few things worth knowing

Distance is power. The further the cross sits from your tank, the harder the shot. A long, flat cross sends the shell skimming across the map; a short, tall one drops it close by.

Read the wind before every map. The arrow shows which way it blows and the number how hard. Against a strong headwind, aim further out than looks right.

Dig your way through. If a hill is in the way, there is no shame in blasting it down first. The enemy is not a perfect shot either, so a couple of ground-clearing turns are often worth it.

There is something to find. A fourth weapon is hidden in the game. It shows up on key 4 once you have earned it, and the game tells you when that happens.

Credits and licence

T8NKS was created by the developer who goes by "your name here". According to its source code, several of the levels were designed by other Octojam participants: Mastigophoran, InternetJanitor, Everdraed, Tann and JamesRossi. It runs here in Octo, the CHIP-8 development tool and emulator by John Earnest (MIT licence). The game is kept in the Chip8 Community Archive, which places everything in it in the public domain under CC0 1.0. The licence text is linked from this page.
