About the game

You must have dozed off somewhere, because when you open your eyes the mall is closed. The walkway is bright and spotless, the stores around it are silent, and the doors at the exit are locked for the night. There is nobody to ask and nothing to do but find your own way out.

The mall is small: a few shops and back rooms around the main walkway, each with a couple of things worth a closer look. Getting out is a matter of noticing what each place has to offer and working out what opens what. There are no monsters, no deadlines and no way to die, just the strange calm of a public place after hours.

Jason Self wrote The Mall in 2019 as a short free-software adventure. It makes a gentle first text adventure or a quick break for experienced players, and can be finished in a single sitting.

A few things worth knowing

Walk the whole mall first. It only takes a few moves, and it shows you every room before you start using things.

Look on and under the furniture. Tables, desks and shelves are where the useful things tend to be.

Read the descriptions. The game mentions every exit and most important objects in plain words.

Think about who works here. The staff areas behind the shops are as important as the shops themselves.
