About the game

The year is 1258, and the Mongol Empire is moving west, conquering everything in its way. You have word that its forces are closing in, and all that stands between them and your treasure chest is whatever you can put on the road.

You play from above, on a small pixel-art map with a winding dirt path that ends at the chest. A bar at the bottom of the screen holds your troops: soldiers, archers and knights, plus walls and a bin. Each one costs gold, and you start with only a few coins, so the first choices matter. Pick a troop, click a free square and it is placed there; the circle that appears shows how far it can attack. Enemies follow the road toward the chest, and your troops fight whatever comes into range. Walls do not fight back, but they give good cover to archers and knights standing behind them. The bin lets you take a troop back, though you only get one gold coin for it. Every enemy your troops defeat earns one gold for the next defender. The waves keep coming and get stronger, and the game ends when the chest's health bar runs out.

The game is made of a tiny 200 by 152 pixel canvas that is scaled up, with a hand-drawn sprite sheet, its own pixel font and synthesised sound effects. Reece Bennett made it for js13kGames 2023, where the whole game, zipped, had to fit in 13 kilobytes. The theme that year was "Time".

Playing it here

Click Play, then click in the game to start. A few messages introduce the story, and then a "Click to begin" prompt appears; click once more and the first wave starts marching. The game scales to your window, so a bigger window gives bigger pixels. The speaker icon in the corner turns the sound on and off. When the chest is lost, a game-over screen shows how many waves you survived and lets you restart.

Controls

Input Action
Click a troop in the bar select it
Click on the map place the selected troop
Hover over a troop or toolbar icon show its range or its cost and stats
Bin tool, then click a troop remove it (1 gold back)
Speaker button sound on or off

A few things worth knowing

Watch the path. The enemies follow the road, so troops on the corners can reach the enemy for longer.

Archers behind walls. Walls soak up damage, so an archer behind one can keep firing for longer.

Spend wisely at first. You begin with 6 gold, so a soldier (2) and an archer (3) is a steadier start than one expensive knight (5). Each kill pays one gold back, and walls cost just 1.
