About the game

Tiny Dungeon is a first-person dungeon crawler in the old tradition: you move one square at a time, turn in place, and see the corridor in front of you drawn in perspective. The whole dungeon is a 16 by 16 grid, and it is full of things that want your attention: iron bars and locked doors, switches in the walls that open something somewhere else, hidden fake walls, teleporters that move you across the map, and spinners that turn you around without telling you. The game suggests you draw a map, and that is good advice.

Treasure chests hold a compass, a wooden shield, a sword, an amulet that lets you see through fake walls, a ring that makes the screen flash when you are teleported or spun around, and healing potions. Some chests bite: a few of them are monsters in disguise. The rest of the population is rats, skeletons and one huge end boss. Fights are turn-based and use dice: both sides roll, armour takes a bite out of the damage, and wounds stay put, so a monster you hurt and left behind will still be hurt when you come back. Some monsters strike first, others are slow but deadly, and you can always turn tail.

The goal is to reach the Fountain of Life and bring home the remedy that your true love needs. The author began the game for the tiny ATtiny85 chip of the TinyJoypad handheld and squeezed the whole 3D engine into 8 KB; the Arduboy version you can play here comes from the same code.

Playing it here

This is a homebrew game made for the Arduboy, the open, credit-card-sized handheld with a tiny black-and-white screen: a new game by an independent developer, not a commercial release. It runs here in Ardens, an Arduboy emulator. Click Play now and press Z on the first dark screen to begin.

F2 saves the complete state of the game at any moment, and F4 brings it back. A gamepad works too.

Controls

Key Arduboy button Action
Up D-pad walk forward
Down D-pad step backward (also the way to run from a fight)
Left / right D-pad turn left or right
Z A begin; attack; open a chest; flip a switch
F2 / F4 — save / load the state

A few things worth knowing

Draw a map. There are teleporters and spinners, and the corridors look alike. Paper is still the best tool.

Check every chest and every switch. Treasure makes the fights survivable, and switches open bars elsewhere in the dungeon.

Mind the potions. Damage lasts until you drink a healing potion, so don't walk into the next fight on low health.

Not every chest is a gift. If something is wrong with a chest, be ready to fight.

Credits and licence

Tiny Dungeon was made by Lorandil, who drew all the pixel art himself and released the game under the MIT licence. The game is built with the Arduboy2 library (BSD 3-clause), ArduboyTones (MIT) and the Arduino AVR core (LGPL 2.1), so the source code of the game, of the libraries and of the core is hosted alongside it. The licence texts are linked from this page.
