About the game
Tiny Tactics is a turn-based tactics game on a small grid of grass, rocks and beach, where two sides take turns moving units. You command a squad of knights, each with a few hearts of health, and the computer commands a mixed force of spiders, slimes and crabs. The rules are the ones you may know from Advance Wars: on your turn you can move each unit and then attack an enemy within its range, and the order you do those things in is the whole game.
You click on a unit and a small menu offers Move, Attack and Done. Move shows the tiles the unit can reach, found with an A* search that takes the fewest turns, and you click one to go there. Attack shows the enemies within range, and each hit takes some hearts away, with a floating damage number to show how many. Done passes the unit's turn. When every unit has acted the computer plays its own turn, a banner announces the turn number and the levels get bigger and harder: Gentle Plains, a second Gentle Plains and Beach Danger.
A short tutorial, narrated in boxes of text, teaches the controls on the first board and you can skip it by pressing S. The game is drawn in pixel art with sunny skies and clouds, and has a cheerful title tune and sound effects for every move and hit.
It was written by Erik Onarheim, the author of the Excalibur.js engine, as a "high fidelity example" of how to build a tactics game with it, and he invites people to use as much of it as they want in their own games.
Playing it here
Click Play, wait for the loading bar (the game carries a lot of music, so it is a big download), then click the title card. The game works with mouse or touch. The speaker button at the bottom left mutes the sound and "credits" at the bottom right opens the credits page. Nothing is sent anywhere.

A few things worth knowing
Move first, then attack. A unit that has attacked cannot move any more that turn, so get into position before you strike.
Do not leave a hurt knight in front. The hearts above each unit show how much more it can take.
Use the terrain. Rocks block the way, and the paths the game shows are the shortest in turns, not in tiles.
Credits and licence
Tiny Tactics, the Excalibur.js tactics sample, was made by Erik Onarheim and is released under the BSD 2-Clause licence. He drew the art with Aseprite and made the sound effects with jsfxr. The font NotJamSlabSerif11 (from not-jam), the battle music by Juhani Junkala, the music by poinl ("Title X") and the title music "Two Left Socks" by congusbongus are all CC0. It runs on Excalibur.js 0.32 and lit (BSD). The licence texts are linked from this page. The changes made for this site are: the icon font that was loaded from Google Fonts is replaced by emoji for the sound button, the social-media tags of the page are removed, and the links in the credits page open in another tab.
