About the game

Toko is a small platformer for the original Game Boy, built from single-screen rooms and made in about a month for the Game Boy Competition 2023. You play a stick-figure assassin in the service of a king. The game opens in the throne room with a single order: destroy every living creature on this planet.

From there you head out through a string of rooms. A guard points you to the room where your gun is waiting; after that the way goes through rooms guarded by snails and by snipers who fire across the screen, past a locked door that needs a key, over a floor that starts to move when you press a button you really should have left alone, into a fight with a giant fly, through two forests of tricky jumps and down a staircase to the heart of the planet.

It is a short game, meant to be finished in one sitting, and it hides a choice that changes how it ends. The king, the guard and nearly everyone you meet can be shot, and what you do with that decides what happens when you reach the end.

This is the ROM the author published, unchanged, running in the binjgb Game Boy emulator. The game has no save of its own; the emulator's F2 and F4 keys save and load the whole machine state in this browser. The game is in English.

Tips

Talk to everyone. Stand next to a character and press Z. The guards tell you where to go, and one strange creature that bullets cannot hurt has a reward for whoever brings it a gold coin.

Gold coins are checkpoints. There are two, each tucked away in a room that is easy to walk past. After you take one, dying sends you back to it when you press Enter; without any, a death sends you back to the very beginning.

Watch the snipers. They fire on a steady rhythm. Duck under a shot or jump over it, then answer with your own.

The fly takes a beating. The boss needs a dozen hits, and its health is shown on screen. Keep moving: it follows you around the room.

There are two endings. What happens at the heart of the planet depends on one decision you can make early on, and again at the very end.
