About the game
Troposphere drops a small astronaut in a glass helmet into a city of dark towers under a bright violet sky. The way back home is up: every level is a set of towers with ledges and ladders, and the goal is to climb high enough to reach the glowing portal at the top. The city is not empty, though. Drones and patrolling enemies guard the way, and every touch takes a big bite out of your energy.
Two special powers set it apart from a plain platformer. The anti-gravity jump takes you longer and higher than a normal leap, which opens up gaps a regular jump cannot cross. Holding the time-travel key runs the enemies and the clouds backwards while you stand still, so you can wait for a patrol to come back around. Both powers, and every hit you take, use the same energy bar in the corner, so spending it is a choice and every level turns into a puzzle about where it pays off most.
Sami Heikkinen and Tero Jäntti made Troposphere for js13kGames 2019, a competition where the whole game has to fit in 13 KB. The characters, the buildings and the enemies are drawn as small SVG images, and the music and effects were composed for the game.
Playing it here
Click Play, then press Enter on the title screen. Use the keyboard; the game has no touch controls, so it is best on a computer. The first level is gentle: walk to the right, climb the ladders and reach the portal on top of the tower. Nothing is saved between visits.
Controls
| Input | Action |
|---|---|
| ← → or A D | walk |
| ↑ or W | jump or climb |
| Space or G | anti-gravity jump |
| T (hold) | time travel (uses a lot of energy) |
| Enter | start, try again |
A few things worth knowing
Watch the energy bar. The green bar in the top-left corner is the fuel for both powers, and enemy hits drain it too. Use the powers to cross a gap or dodge a patrol, not to wander.
Use the rewind. Time travel is stronger than it looks: instead of rushing past a drone, stand still and hold T until its path is clear again. The screen shows when it is on.
Take the portal. The portal at the top of each tower is the way to the next level, so plan the whole climb before you start.
