About the game
In Numberland, everybody is afraid of number 13, because 13 is supposed to bring bad luck. You play that unlucky little number, a pink 13 with one big eye and two thin legs, who only wants to prove everyone wrong and make some friends. The trouble is that, as soon as the other numbers see you, they run away.
Unloved 13 is a short platformer with a story told in small speech boxes. You walk and jump across purple hills and blocks, climb tall steps, push objects, and trigger spots that make platforms move. Along the way you meet the other numbers, and helping them is how you win them over: one number is stuck and needs a way out, another is afraid of a spider, and a third will be your friend if you bring a cupcake. There are five levels in all.
Homer Dilpleu made Unloved 13 for js13kGames 2024, a competition where the whole game has to fit in 13 KB and the theme was "Triskaidekaphobia", the fear of the number 13. It was his second entry, and his first platformer. It runs on a small 2D engine of his own, the 13 itself was drawn with help from his family, and the music is made for the game.
Playing it here
Click Play, then press Up (or W or Z) to jump on the start screen. The first level starts with a wall to your right, so walk to the left, where the steps and platforms are. Use the keyboard; the game has no touch controls, so it is best on a computer. Nothing is saved between visits. The game plays music, so check your volume.
Controls
| Input | Action |
|---|---|
| ← → or A D (Q also goes left) | walk |
| ↑ or W or Z | jump |
A few things worth knowing
Read the boxes. The little text boxes give you the goal of each level, such as who needs help and what to bring.
Walk the other way. In the first level, the way forward is to the left, up the steps. A tall wall blocks the right.
Time your jumps. Some platforms move or fall away, so watch where they are going before you jump.
