About the game

Wander drops you on a slab of rock hanging in an empty, pale blue sky. There is no story and no enemy, just a long course of floating islands, narrow outcrops, tall grey towers and gaps far too wide to jump, and the question of how to get across them. Fall, and the world slowly fades to black before putting you back where you last stood safely.

What carries you over the worst gaps is a grappling hook. Aim at any surface, hold Shift, and a line shoots out and reels you in, so you can pull yourself up a tower wall, swing towards a ledge or stretch a jump that would otherwise end in the void. The hook runs on a charge, shown by the bar at the bottom of the screen: it drains while you hang on and refills when you let go, so long crossings have to be split into hops.

The movement will feel familiar to anyone who has played the classic first-person shooters of the late nineties. razh adapted the player physics from the published Quake III Arena source code, with air control, friction and momentum that reward running starts. The geometry, lighting and the quiet electronic music are all generated by the code.

razh made Wander for js13kGames 2018, whose theme was "Offline".

Playing it here

Click Play and then click inside the game: the browser asks to capture the mouse, which is how you look around. Grey cubes floating above some platforms are checkpoints; they light up when you reach their platform, and that is where you come back after a fall. Press P to pause or Esc to release the mouse; clicking the game again captures it once more. Nothing is saved between visits.

A few things worth knowing

Let go early. Releasing Shift a little before you reach a ledge keeps your momentum and lets the charge refill for the next pull.

Aim high. Hooking onto the top edge of a tower lifts you over it, while hooking its middle only slams you into the wall.

Use the jump in the air. Combining a jump with a hook pull, then steering with the strafe keys, carries you much further than either one alone.

Credits and licence

Wander was created by razh. The game is released under the MIT licence; because its movement code is a translation of functions from the Quake III Arena source code (id Software, GNU GPL version 2 or later), the full source code of this build is hosted alongside it. The noise generator comes from simplex-noise.js by Jonas Wagner (MIT). The licence texts and the source code are linked from this page.
