About the game
Wasmanoid is a brick-breaker in the classic mould. A wall of bricks fills the top of the screen, a ball bounces around the playfield, and you slide a paddle along the bottom to keep it in play. Every brick the ball hits breaks or weakens and adds to your score, and the round is won when the last brick is gone. If the ball gets past the paddle, the game is over.
Broken bricks sometimes let a bonus fall. Catch it with the paddle and your play improves: the paddle gets longer, the ball hits harder, or the paddle moves faster. Each of these has a limit, so after you have maxed one the game gives you the others. The top of the screen shows your score and a timer that counts the time of the round.
The game keeps a table of high scores. When you end a round with a score that makes the list, you type your three-letter name and it is saved on the WASM-4 disk. The scores stay in this browser between visits.
Playing it here
Wasmanoid was made for WASM-4, a fantasy console: an imaginary handheld with a 160 by 160 screen, four colours, a D-pad and two buttons, for which independent developers write new games. The author, Claudio Mattera, built it in Rust for the first WASM-4 game jam, in January 2022. It runs here in the official WASM-4 web runtime and is about 52 KB. Press Z on the title screen to begin.
Controls
| Input | Action |
|---|---|
| Left and right arrows | move the paddle |
| Z (button 2) | start; save your name in the high-score table |
| Up and down arrows | change the current letter (high-score table) |
| Left and right arrows | move to another letter (high-score table) |
| Enter | WASM-4 menu (pause, reset) |
On a phone or tablet, the WASM-4 runtime shows touch buttons on the screen.
Tips
Aim with the edge. Where the ball lands on the paddle changes the way it leaves, so use the edges to send it into a corner and clear the sides.
Always go for the bonuses. A longer paddle makes the rest of the game easier, so it is worth leaving a loose ball to catch one when it is safe.
Do not chase the ball. Stay under it and let it come to you, with small moves rather than sweeping ones.
FAQ
Are the scores saved? Yes, on the WASM-4 disk in this browser.
Can I play it with a mouse? No. The paddle is moved with the arrow keys.
Credits and licence
Wasmanoid was written by Claudio Mattera (2022), who made the game, its graphics and its sounds. It is free software under the Mozilla Public License 2.0, and the source code of the version served here, with the lockfile and the build script, is hosted alongside the game. It uses a few small Rust libraries under MIT, Apache-2.0, Zlib or ISC licences, and it runs in the official WASM-4 runtime (ISC). The licence texts are linked from this page.
