About the game

A band of human fighters has to push through a country overrun by imps. Each battle is played on a small hexagonal field, a few dozen hexes across, with no scrolling: everything that matters is on the screen. You move your fighters one at a time, spend their action points on moving and attacking, and end your turn with the hourglass. Then the imps move, and the whole field comes alive with small moves, because nearly everything you or they do can set off something else.

The core of the game is the reaction attack. A fighter who has a reactive attack left strikes at any enemy that steps into his reach, or tries to walk away from him, and an enemy that is hit that way is stopped on the spot. Standing in the right place matters as much as hitting hard. A spearman reaches two hexes and punishes anything that closes in; a swordsman hits harder up close. The imps answer with bombs, poison, a summoner that calls more of them, and a plain mob that tries to surround you. Armor soaks hits, an armor-break stat strips it, and the hit chance is shown before you commit, so you can plan with real numbers.

The campaign has six battles in a row. After each one you earn renown, which you spend on recruits (hammermen, alchemists and more) and on upgrades for the fighters you have; those who fall in a battle are gone for good. A "demo battle" button on the main menu gives you a quick single fight if you only want to try the rules.

It was made by Andrey Lesnikov in Rust, with a small engine of his own on top of the macroquad library, and all the pictures are his own vector drawings.

Playing it here

The game runs in the page and is played with the mouse or a touch screen; no keyboard is needed. It has no sound and it does not save, so the campaign is lost when you close the page. The download is about 2 MB.

Tips

Let them come to you. An imp that walks next to your spearman takes a reaction hit before it can attack. Hold a line and make them spend their moves.

Read the colored dots. Above each fighter, green marks his strength, red his attacks and blue his moves left this turn. Select a fighter to read all his numbers in a panel, including how many reactive attacks he keeps for the enemy turn.

Do not leave the support units in front. Alchemists and healers are worth more alive than a free kill for the imps.

Keep your fighters alive. The ones you lose do not come back, and renown is better spent on upgrading a fighter than on replacing one.
