About the game

Escape Guldur drops you into a dark fortress with nothing but your fists and a handful of hearts, and the way out is somewhere on the other side. The screen shows only a small area at a time, drawn in flat shapes that stand out against the dark, and you move one step at a time through rooms and corridors, opening them up as you go.

The fights are turn based. You and the enemies act in turns, which gives the game its calm and tense rhythm. When something is in reach, you aim the item you are carrying with X and the game picks a target; the arrow keys change it when more than one is possible. Then X again uses the item, and the enemies answer. What you carry decides how you attack: fists hit the four squares next to you, a sword hits all eight, and the small axe is thrown at an enemy you can see. The floor has pickups, such as a sword, an axe and extra hearts, so part of the game is choosing the right item for the room you are in.

There are six levels. Each one is a small map to cross, with its own layout of rooms, pickups and enemies. When you finally reach the end, the game shows a "You escaped" screen with your result. A reload screen lets you restart from any level you have already reached.

Playing it here

Escape Guldur was made for WASM-4, a fantasy console: an imaginary handheld with a 160 by 160 screen, four colours, a D-pad and two buttons, for which independent developers write new games. Chris Heyes made it for the second WASM-4 game jam, in 2022, and has kept it up to date since. It runs here in the official WASM-4 web runtime and is only about 30 KB. Nothing is saved between visits.

Controls

Input Action
Arrow keys move; change the target while aiming
X (button 1) aim the current item; use it on the target
Z (button 2) cycle through your items; cancel an aim
X / Z (title screen) start / show the controls
Enter WASM-4 menu (pause, reset)

On a phone or tablet, the WASM-4 runtime shows touch buttons on the screen.

Tips

Look before you step. You only see what is close, so move a step at a time and stop when something shows up.

Pick the right item. Fists only reach the four squares around you, so grab a sword or an axe as soon as you find one and use Z to switch to it.

Cancel an aim. If you aimed the wrong item, Z cancels it before you commit.

FAQ

How many levels are there? Six.

Can I start from a later level? The reload screen lists the levels you have reached and lets you restart from one of them, as long as the page stays open.
