How to Exorcise Your Husband

About the game

Three elderly ladies, Halima, Dorothy and Josette, share the same problem: their late husbands refuse to leave. After a first try on a much easier target (the neighbourhood's cat ghost, Fudgy), they set out to exorcise each husband in turn, with a set of ghost-hunting instruments they ordered online and read the manual of very carefully.

Every level is a small grid with a ghost hidden somewhere on it, and the puzzle has two halves. First you have to find the ghost. Each lady has a different idea about where it could be, and the squares they light up when you select them narrow the search down. Then you move the anti-ghost trap onto its square, and the real work begins: each character plays an instrument, each instrument makes a wave, and the ghost has a paranormal frequency of its own. Put every lady at the right distance from it and the waves line up and resonate; get it wrong and the ghost notices, moves away, or catches one of you.

A turn gives you a limited number of moves, and the ghost does not sit still, so you have to plan before you place. The "Paranormal Resonance" bar and the wave drawings on the left of the screen show how close you are, which is the deduction half of the game turned into something you can see and hear. The instruments (an oud, a flute, a frame drum) and the ghost each have their own musical layer, so the music builds up as the puzzle comes together.

The story and the jokes carry the game. The ladies talk through every move, the ghosts have personalities and voices, and the eight levels run from the cat to the three husbands. It was made by a team of four, an audio engineer and composer, an illustrator, a narrative designer and a programmer, in one month for the GitHub Game Off 2025 jam (theme: "waves"). The authors say a playthrough takes between 15 and 40 minutes.

Playing it here

Click Play and wait for the page to load (about 35 MB, with all the music, downloaded only when you press the button), then click "Start Playing" and "New Game". The game is played only with the mouse. Your progress and your settings are saved in this browser, so you can stop whenever you like and continue later; "Reset Game Save" in the menu starts over. A desktop screen is recommended. The Settings menu lets you change the volume, skip the dialogues, and turn off the wave simulation, the particles and the complex lighting if the game runs slowly on your computer.

Tips

Find the ghost before you fix the distances. Select each lady in turn and compare the squares she marks; the ghost is where the answers agree.

Think in turns. You have a few moves per turn and the ghost can move at the end of it, so do not spend your moves on a guess.

Use the resonance bar. It tells you whether a move helped, so try a position, look at the bar and the waves, and adjust.

Restart without fear. The R key returns everyone to the starting squares, and the puzzles are short.
