About the game
Hyperspace Roll is a space battle fought with dice. Your ship's systems are a handful of dice, and each face is an action: shoot, raise a shield, heal, pierce the enemy's shields, disrupt their attack, and more. You roll, keep the faces you like, reroll the rest, and when you are happy you fire them all at once.
The catch is that the enemy does not wait for you. Its next attack charges up on screen while you are still rolling, so every reroll is a gamble against the clock. Matching faces add up to stronger effects, and the most powerful faces come at a price: using them can make a die malfunction, or even all of them, leaving them stuck for a while before they can be rolled again.
After each victory you customise your dice, swapping one face for an upgrade and slowly building the combos you want. The enemies keep getting stronger, and the run ends when your ship is destroyed. The score is how many levels you got through.
Playing it here
This is a homebrew game made for the Game Boy Advance: a new game by independent developers, not a commercial release. It was made in 48 hours for the GMTK Game Jam 2022, whose theme was "roll of the dice", and runs here in the mGBA emulator. Click Play and press any button on the title screen.
Your best score is saved by the game and stays in this browser. F2 also saves the state of the emulator at any moment and F4 brings it back. A gamepad works too.

A few things worth knowing
Watch the enemy's charge. The bar next to each of the enemy's upcoming attacks shows how long you have. When it is about to fire a big shot, a quick shield is worth more than a perfect roll.
Doubles and triples are powerful, but they cost you. Strong faces can leave dice malfunctioning afterwards. Plan for the turn after, not just this one.
Upgrade with a plan. Stacking the same kind of face on several dice makes combos far more likely than spreading upgrades around.
