I Have Put The Creature Into My Gun

About the game
You are a tiny explorer in a cave full of tiny creatures, and your gun does not fire bullets. It fires the creatures. Walk up to one, pick it up, load it, and shoot it at something: something out of reach, an enemy, a gap you cannot cross. The game was made in 48 hours for Ludum Dare 56, whose theme was "Tiny Creatures", and its whole design grows out of that one idea.
There are two kinds of creature. The small grey ones have a secondary move, a glide: press jump again in mid-air and hold it to float over a gap. The bunnies are the fire type. Shift switches which one is loaded, so most rooms come down to working out which one you need and where to put it. The cave is a connected map, drawn in a clean pixel style in a warm brown-and-purple palette, with spiders, hazards and secrets in the corners.
There is no proper ending screen, but the author says there is a special place at the end for those who work out where to go.
Playing it here
The game runs in the page and needs a keyboard. Click on it once, and then press Z or X on the title screen to begin. It is about 1 MB with one music track and sound effects. After a death, Z or X respawns you.
Controls
| Key | Action |
|---|---|
| Left / Right (or A / D) | move |
| Z (or W, Space) | jump; press again in mid-air for the special move |
| X (or K) | shoot the loaded creature |
| Shift (or L) | switch the loaded creature |
Tips
Read the notices at the bottom. The first rooms teach the buttons with short messages, and some of them explain the creatures' secondary abilities.
Grey creatures are for gaps. Hold jump in the air to glide a long way, which also saves you from a fall into the dark.
Try the other creature on every obstacle. If something does not respond to one kind, the other may be the key.
Credits and licence
"I Have Put The Creature Into My Gun" was made by Jez Swanson (Jezzamonn) for Ludum Dare 56 and released under the MIT licence. The sound effects are generated with jsfxr (Unlicense). In this version the game's own pixel fonts, which the repository does not distribute, were replaced with Press Start 2P (SIL Open Font License 1.1), and the Google Analytics code and the link to the author's website were removed. The patch, the build script and the licence texts are linked from this page.
FAQ
The game does not react to the keys. Click on the game once so the page has the keyboard focus.
Is there a save? No. The game is short, and a death only respawns you.
Does it work on a phone? There are touch buttons, but a keyboard is much better.
