About the game

JezNES is a puzzle game about fencing off space. A rectangular board starts out completely open, with a few balls bouncing around inside it. You control a small ship, and from wherever it sits you can start building a wall: it grows from that spot in both directions at once, either up and down or left and right depending on how the ship is turned.

If a ball touches a wall that is still being built, that wall is destroyed and you lose a life. If the wall reaches the edges or other walls on both sides, it is finished, and every part of the board that no longer has a ball in it is filled in and cleared. The aim is to clear 75 percent of the board. Each level adds one more ball, and you start with ten lives and win an extra life with every level you clear. Lose them all and the game is over.

The bottom of the screen shows the level, the percentage cleared, your score, your lives and the target.

Playing it here

This is a homebrew game made for the NES: a new game by an independent developer, not a commercial release. This is an alpha version, so rough edges are possible. It runs here in jsnes, an NES emulator written in JavaScript. Click Play, then press Enter on the title screen with "1 PLAYER" selected. Enter also pauses and resumes. F2 saves the current state of the game in this browser and F4 brings it back. A gamepad also works.

Controls

Key NES button Action
Arrow keys Control Pad move the ship
X A start building a wall
Z B turn the ship (horizontal / vertical wall)
Enter Start start the game; pause / resume
F2 / F4 — save / load the state

A few things worth knowing

Start walls when the balls are far away. A wall takes a moment to grow, so begin it on the side of the board that the balls are leaving.

Small rooms first. Closing off a corner that holds no ball is quick and safe, and each one brings the percentage up.

Trap the balls. A room that holds a ball is not cleared, so building a wall that leaves every ball on one side clears everything on the other side at once.
