About the game

Jump & Sword & Dash is a small platformer drawn in the tiny style of old one-bit games: bone-white stone on a deep blue-green background, a blue creature as your hero and skulls, wizards, fairies and spiders as enemies. It was made in about two weeks, and it has the clean, quick feel of a first game that knows exactly what it wants to be.

You have three moves and each has its own button. You jump. You swing a sword at what is in front of you. And you dash, a short burst of speed that carries you across gaps and through danger. The first rooms teach them one by one with big words on the wall ("Use attacks to defeat enemies", "Jump off walls"), and then the rooms combine them: climb a wall with wall-jumps, dash over a trap, cut down the skull that waits at the top. There are hearts in the corner for your health, and a boss crab among the enemies.

The game starts with a studio splash screen, then a title screen, and a short "How to play" card before the first room. Notice the sound: every jump, hit and dash has a small, crisp 8-bit effect, and there is a different music track for the different parts of the game.

Tips

Dash sideways. The dash is a quick horizontal burst, good for crossing a wide gap or slipping past an enemy. It needs a moment to recharge, so do not spend it without a reason.

Use the walls. If a gap is too tall, look for a wall. Jumping against it pushes you up and away, and you can chain it.

Hit first. Swing the sword as an enemy comes into reach instead of waiting for it to come to you.

FAQ

Does it work on a phone? The game needs a keyboard.

Is my progress saved? No, the game has no save feature.

Why is the background plain? The original has two forest background layers by another artist under a licence that does not allow changing them, so this version leaves them out. The game plays the same.
