About the game
Mazocarta is a card roguelike. You walk through a branching map of nodes, and at each one you meet a fight, a shop, a place to rest or a random event. The fights are turn-based card duels in which you can always see what the enemy will do on its next turn, so the game is about answering a known threat with the cards you have. Each turn you draw a hand, spend a limited amount of energy, and choose between attacking, putting up shield and the other effects on your cards. Between fights you earn new cards, modules (passive upgrades that apply to the whole run) and consumables, and you decide how your deck will grow.
A run has three sectors, each with its own enemies and a boss at the end of the map. Fights are deterministic: there are no hidden dice rolls in combat, only the order in which your cards come up. That makes losing feel like a mistake you can learn from, and makes every run a short puzzle with new pieces. The look is a black terminal screen with neon green and cyan, drawn entirely by the game, and the whole thing is small enough to load in a second.
The interface is in English and Spanish (change it in Settings on the title screen). The game also has a two-player mode where two devices pair with QR codes on the same local network; it needs a camera and a second device, so it is not available from inside this page.
Playing it here
Click Play and the game loads in the page (about 1.5 MB, downloaded only when you press the button). Press Start; the intro can be skipped. The game keeps your current run and settings in this browser, so you can close the page and continue later. Clearing the site data erases it. The page makes no requests outside this site.
Controls
| Input | Action |
|---|---|
| Click or tap on a card | play it (it costs the energy shown on its corner) |
| End Turn | finish your turn; the enemy acts |
| Click or tap on a map node | go there (only the connected nodes ahead are open) |
| Menu, Info, Legend (on the map) | pause options, your run's stats, and what each node symbol means |
| Enter, Space, Esc, numbers and letters | the same actions from the keyboard |
Tips
Read the enemy's next move. The panel on top says what it will do on its turn, so you can decide how much shield you need before you attack.
Do not skip rests and shops. Healing and a better deck matter more than rushing to the boss.
Keep the deck small and sharp. More cards is not always better; a card you do not need is a card that can come up in place of the one you do.
Look at the Legend. The symbols on the map tell you which nodes are fights and which ones are safe.
FAQ
Is it hard? It starts gently and gets tougher in each sector. A lost run is short, so it is easy to try another build.
Does it work on a phone? Yes: it is made for touch as well as mouse and keyboard.
Is there a save? Your run is saved in this browser when you leave the page.
Credits and licence
Mazocarta was made by Tim Cogan and is free software under the MIT licence. The game draws all of its graphics itself and uses no outside art, fonts or sounds. The two-player pairing uses the qrcode library (MIT) and jsQR (Apache 2.0); the Rust crates compiled into the game are under MIT, Apache 2.0 and similar licences, all in the licence file linked from this page. We compile the game from the author's source with three small changes (the author's website link is not opened, there is no offline service worker, and the combat icons load as SVG), and host that source and the changes next to the game.
