About the game
Neon Dungeon drops you into a labyrinth with no light of its own. The only glow comes from the neon-blue walls, which fade into the dark a few steps away from where you stand, so every corridor is a small act of faith. A new dungeon is generated each time you play, and the top of the screen keeps count of what matters: three red hearts for your health and five magenta gems that you have to collect before the exit lets you out.
You are not alone down there. Snakes slither through the corridors, and touching one costs a heart, though a heart left lying around brings one back. You can strike back with a short attack, which is the whole combat system: no inventory, no levels, no menus. That is the charm of it. The game is small enough to understand in the first ten seconds and tense enough to keep you leaning toward the screen.
Attila Horváth made Neon Dungeon for js13kGames 2017, where the theme was "lost" and the whole game had to fit in 13 KB. The lighting is done with shaders, which means the page needs WebGL. Any recent desktop browser has it.
Playing it here
Click Play, then click inside the game once so it receives the keyboard, and press a key on the title screen. The first message tells you the goal: collect the gems and find the exit. Walk slowly, because you see very little of the maze at a time, and use the attack key before you walk into something, not after. If you lose all your hearts you start again in a freshly generated dungeon. Nothing is saved.

A few things worth knowing
Follow the walls. The lit edges are your map. You only see the part of the maze that your light reaches, so use the blue outlines to remember where you have been.
Attack first. The snakes hurt you when you touch them, so hit them as they step into your light instead of waiting to see what they do.
Take your time. The maze is random, so there is no route to memorise. Slow, careful steps beat running.
