About the game

Opensara is a platformer with a shoot-em-up on the side, starring Sara, the girl who became the mascot of OpenGameArt, a site where artists share free game art. A witch has fed Sara poisoned apples, so she has to cross the world, collect the magic keys that open magic signs and reach the exit of each level before her energy runs out. On the ground she runs, jumps twice in the air and stomps enemies from above; in the flying stages she takes the controls of a seaplane and shoots her way through.

You choose the world from a menu: Mountain, Tower, Cloud, Train and City, each with its own look and its own enemies, plus a short Tutorial that shows the controls. The art is colourful pixel art, the sound effects are retro bleeps, and the soundtrack is a set of fast chiptune and rock tracks that suits the pace of the game. Some levels end with a boss.

Playing it here

Click Play and wait a moment while the game loads (about 11 MB, downloaded only when you press the button). Click inside the game once so that it receives the keyboard, then press Enter on the title screen. Use Up and Down to pick a world and Enter to start. The first time, the Tutorial is a good start. The game does not save your progress; each session starts from the menu. A gamepad also works.

Controls

Input Action
Left and right arrows move
Up arrow jump (press again in the air to double jump)
Down arrow stomp, while jumping
Space shoot, in the flying levels
Arrow keys move in all directions, in the flying levels
Enter start, pause and resume, skip scenes

Tips

Double jump. Many gaps need the second jump; press Up again at the top of the first one.

Stomp enemies. Landing on an enemy with the Down arrow hurts it, so you can use the fall as an attack.

Collect the keys. The exit stays closed until you have opened the magic signs with the keys of the level.
