About the game
You never walk in Rebound. You are a round blue creature with big eyes, and the only thing you can do is bounce. Every time you touch the ground, a wall or the water, you spring back up, and your job is to steer that endless rhythm through levels of grassy hills, trees and flowers while collecting coins and not falling into trouble.
The control is simple and surprisingly rich. Left and right move you in the air, as in any platformer, but you also choose how high the next bounce will be: hold the A button for a big one, the B button for a small one, or neither for the normal one. Holding B also stops you from bouncing off walls. Let go of A while you are rising and the jump is cut short, which gives you fine control, and water halves the height of your bounces. The first signs in the level, with a big letter A on them, show you the idea.
This is a demo, and the title screen says so. The levels it includes run through forests and plains in a bright palette that only the Game Boy Color can show, and the game has a music engine and sound effects of its own. It was made for the 2021 Game Boy Compo by DevEd with help from programmer Arkia and the pixel artist Twoflower.
Playing it here
This is a homebrew game made for the Game Boy Color: a new game by an independent developer, not a commercial release. It runs here in binjgb, a Game Boy emulator compiled to WebAssembly, in its Game Boy Color mode, and it needs that mode: it does not run on the original monochrome Game Boy. Click Play, wait through the splash screen and press Enter at the title.
F2 saves the current state of the emulator in this browser and F4 brings it back, which is handy after a hard jump. A gamepad works too.
Controls
| Key | Game Boy button | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Left / Right arrows | Control Pad | steer in the air |
| Down arrow | Control Pad | drop through thin platforms |
| X | A | hold for a higher bounce |
| Z | B | hold for a lower bounce; no wall bounce |
| Enter | Start | start, pause |
| F2 / F4 | — | save / load the emulator state |
A few things worth knowing
Decide before you land. The bounce height is picked when you touch the ground, so hold A or B a moment before you hit it.
Release to shorten. Letting go of A while you rise cuts the bounce, which helps with low ceilings.
Use B on walls. With B held you do not bounce away from a wall, which lets you keep your position instead of being thrown back.
Credits and licence
Rebound is by DevEd (programming, music, sound), with programming by Arkia and graphics by Twoflower, released under the MIT licence. The music engine is DevSound Lite by DevEd, also MIT. This site serves a build we compiled from the authors' source with the debug menu switched off, as the author intended for a release, and without the splash screen with the Game Boy Compo logo. The source, the patch and the build script are hosted alongside the game, and the licence texts are linked from this page.
