About the game
Revengate is a turn-based roguelike set in a steampunk version of Lyon, France, in 1855. You work as an investigator for the mysterious Lux Co., and the game is played as a series of short chapters, each one with its own story told in text, its own map and its own people to meet. Between the fights there are real conversations: you talk to barkeepers, clerks and strangers, and what they say shapes what you do next.
The dungeon part is the classic one. The world is a grid, every step you take lets everything else take a step too, and a careless move in a corridor can end the run. Along the way you find potions and odd steampunk devices, and you fight automata, thieves and creatures drawn by a handful of illustrators.
The game is an independent project by Yannick Gingras with a small group of friends and contributors. It was first published for phones, and this version runs the same game in the browser, with the keyboard and the mouse.
Playing it here
Click Play and wait for the game to load (about 33 MB, downloaded only when you press the button). Press "New Game!" to start the first chapter; the opening story screen has a "Next..." button at the bottom. The game saves in your browser on this device and "Resume" appears on the start screen when a save exists.
Controls
| Input | Action |
|---|---|
| W A S D or arrow keys | move one step (bump into an enemy to attack it) |
| Click or tap a cell | travel there, or open the menu for what is on that cell |
| F | follow the stairs |
| Mouse wheel | zoom the map in and out |
| Esc | go back |
The buttons at the top right open the world map and the examine tool, among other screens, and the hourglass at the bottom right skips a turn.
Tips
Wait with the hourglass. In a turn-based game, letting an enemy come to you is often better than walking into the room.
Talk to everyone. Most characters have something to say, and some of the conversations change the chapter.
Use the examine tool. It tells you what the things around you are before you step next to them.
Mind the doors. Doors can be closed to cut a line of sight; the context menu for a door cell lets you close it.

Changes made for this site: three sound effects that the credits file of the game does not cover were removed (the game plays silently where they were used); the links in the About and Credits screens do not open other pages; and the large illustrations are loaded at a smaller size. Nothing else in the game was changed. The full licence texts and the source of this build are linked from this page.
