About the game

You slip past the cordon in the early hours of the morning. Somewhere deep inside the zone there is said to be a room that will grant any wish, and you just have to make it there: 2000 km away. Road Closed is a roguelike built like a road trip. Most of the time you are behind the wheel in a simple screen of text and a drawing of your car, choosing to keep driving or to stop; the landscape changes as the kilometres go by, from pine plantations gone wild to swamps and mountain passes, and every stretch comes with its own description and its own risks.

Four meters tell you how you are doing: health, energy, food and fuel. Driving burns fuel and tires you out, so sooner or later you have to stop. When you do, the game turns into a classic top-down roguelike around the car: you get out, explore on foot with a weapon and whatever armour you find, pick things up and carry what matters back to the car's inventory. At night you want a fire (apply firewood) to sleep and recover your energy, because the night stalkers are out.

If you make it, you get to make your wish, and the wishes you have made are saved and listed on a menu for later runs. If you do not, the road is still there tomorrow.

Click Play. The game fills the frame with a coloured text display that scales to the size of the window. It is played with the keyboard, with the mouse helping you read descriptions of what is on the map. The run is saved in this browser only, and the page makes no requests outside this site.

Tips

Light a fire at night. Apply firewood next to the car to sleep and regain energy while the night stalkers stay away.

Do not run dry. Fuel and food are the two things that end trips; stop to look for more before you are on empty.

Use the mouse to look. Hovering over a tile tells you about enemies' health and what an item does.

FAQ

Is there a way to win? The goal is to reach the destination and the room that grants a wish; the wishes you have made are kept for later runs.

Is it violent? There is combat against creatures, shown with symbols on a grid, and nothing graphic.

Does it save? Your wishes are stored in this browser; we did not find a Continue option for a run in progress after reloading.

Credits and licence

Road Closed was made by Stephen Sherratt (gridbugs) for the 7DRL Challenge 2026 and is released under the MIT licence. It is written in Rust and compiled to WebAssembly by us from the author's source at a fixed commit, with his libraries and the other open source crates listed in the licence file. The pixel font is PxPlus IBM CGA (and its thin variant) by VileR, from the Ultimate Oldschool PC Font Pack at int10h.org, under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International licence (CC BY-SA 4.0). The files are the ones in the game's repository, served unchanged. We changed one line of the game (the web version saved the wishes under the same key as the controls, so they were never kept) and replaced the author's web page with our own (it blocks connections outside this site, keeps the saved game under its own key and scales the display to the frame). The licence texts, the source, the patch and the build script are linked from this page.
