About the game
You fly a grey jet over a green and blue map that scrolls past, and enemy planes cross the screen shooting at you. Your jet carries only 100 shots, shown as "Ammo" on the right of the screen, and every plane you bring down adds to the "Score" on the left. You can take three hits, and the bar at the top shows how many are left. Reach a score of 30 and the boss bombers show up for the final fight.
The game was made in a week for the LÖVE Jam 2022, where the theme was "earthquake", so the whole screen shakes at the slightest excuse: on the menu, when you shoot, and when something blows up. It is a small game, a few minutes long, with a menu, a pause screen, a boss and a win screen, and it is best played as a quick arcade round.
Playing it here
Click Play and press Return on the title screen. The game has no saved progress: every round starts from the beginning, and nothing is stored in your browser. The game is made for a tall window, so it appears in the middle of the frame with black bars at the sides.
The game runs in the LÖVE game framework, compiled to WebAssembly. This build is the original one, with a few files the game never loads left out and one change: Esc no longer closes the game, since in a browser that would only leave a black screen.
Controls
| Key | Action |
|---|---|
| W / A / S / D | move the plane |
| Space | shoot |
| Left Shift (with W) | afterburner: faster flight and scrolling |
| Return | start the game, pause and resume, restart after the end |
A few things worth knowing
Count your shots. The 100 shots are all you get, with no refills, so aim before you fire and let the plane you cannot reach pass by.
The afterburner is for flying forward. Hold Left Shift while you press W: the jet speeds up and the map scrolls faster (the enemies come faster too). Pressing S switches it off.
Reach 30 for the boss. Once your score gets to 30 the music changes and the bosses come in. The author's own challenge is to finish the game keeping the afterburner always on.
Frequently asked questions
Does it save my score? No. The game has no high-score table or save file.
Does it work on a phone? No. It needs a keyboard (W, A, S, D, Space, Shift and Return); we have not tested it with touch.
Is it free? Yes: Seismic Afterburner is free software under the GNU Affero General Public License, version 3, and the source code of this build is available from this page.
