About the game

Slash'EM started as a NetHack variant that asked one question: what if we added more of everything? The name stands for Super Lotsa Added Stuff Hack, Extended Magic, and it is accurate. It keeps NetHack's rules and its dungeon, then piles on new roles, races, monsters, items, spells and whole new branches of the dungeon to explore.

If you know NetHack, you will feel at home immediately, and then be surprised often. If you do not, the basics are the same: descend, survive, and learn the rules by breaking them. Slash'EM is generally considered harder, and its new content is less balanced, which is part of the appeal.

This is version 0.0.7E7F2, the last official release, from 2006.

Playing it here

This is the official DOS build in text mode, the one closest to classic NetHack. Click Play now and answer the questions to create a character. As in NetHack, the letters on screen are the dungeon: your character is @.

Controls

Movement uses hjkl in the Rogue style (h left, j down, k up, l right) with yubn for the diagonals. The arrow keys work for the four main directions.

A few things worth knowing

NetHack knowledge transfers, mostly. Most items and monsters behave as in NetHack, but not all. Assume nothing about something new.

Pick a sturdy first character. Valkyries and Samurai are as forgiving here as in NetHack. Some of the new roles are fun and fragile.

Save often, and in a safe spot. S saves and quits; the save lives in your browser, so you can come back to it later.
