About the game

Your home world has been struck by a biological weapon, and you hold the only cure. Star Honor starts with the Captain dead, most of the crew gone and the sensors wrecked, and puts you in the Captain's chair of a limping starship. The clock reads ten minutes, and your one goal is to get home before it runs out.

The map is a field of stars that you fly across with the arrows, turning and thrusting like a ship in space. Planets are scattered through the sector. When one comes into range, you can hail it: some species are happy to help, with upgrades, supplies and crystals, while the ones loyal to the Empire will attack. In a battle you strike the planet's defences and it strikes back, with your shields absorbing the damage first and then your engines, weapons and hull, until the planet falls or your ship does. A status screen shows the state of all your systems, your crew, fuel and food, and lets you order an emergency repair if you have enough crew left.

To get closer to home you need crystals: three of them power a warp jump that takes you one sector nearer, and the goal is to reach Sector 1. Because the map is rebuilt every time, each run is a new gamble of what to visit, what to fight and what to skip.

Playing it here

This is a homebrew game made for the Arduboy, the open, credit-card-sized handheld with a tiny black-and-white screen: a new game by an independent developer, not a commercial release. It runs here in Ardens, an Arduboy emulator. Click Play now, wait for the title text to finish typing, and press X to read the log and start. The game keeps no records, but F2 saves the complete state of the emulated console at any moment and F4 brings it back. A gamepad works too.

Controls

Key Arduboy button Action
Up / Down D-pad thrust forward / backward
Left / Right D-pad turn
X B confirm; hail a planet
Z A status screen (map); go back
Up + X D-pad + B warp (with at least 3 crystals)
F2 / F4 — save / load the state

A few things worth knowing

Crystals first. Without three crystals you cannot warp, so visit planets that offer them before anything else.

Fight when you are strong. A planet hits back after every attack of yours, and your shields soak up damage only for so long, so check the status screen before you start a fight.

Watch the clock. The ten minutes run in real time while you fly, so do not wander.

Credits and licence

Star Honor was written by Wenceslao Villanueva Jr and is free software under the MIT licence. It carries its own trimmed copy of the Arduboy library code (BSD licence). We made two small fixes to the source so it works with today's compiler (a missing return in a function and a wait for the display transfer to finish), and both are in the patch linked from this page, together with the licence text and the source code.
