About the game

Super Mega Squid: Terror of the Deep is an arcade rampage with a cartoon sense of humour. You are a giant, very angry squid, and the seaside town above you has 35 humans in it: swimmers, divers, ferry passengers and balloonists. Eat them all before your rage meter empties. The meter drains all the time, a little faster the longer you go, and it fills up again every time you eat something, so you can never stop to rest.

You swim freely under the water and leap out of it to chase seagulls, balloons and aircraft. Your tentacles are dangerous only when they move fast: a hard swim, a lunge or a spin. A slow bump just pushes things around. In the air you can steer and dive, and you get one lunge until you touch water or rock again, which makes the "double lunge" the core trick: lunge up from just below the surface to jump out, then lunge again at the top of the arc. Spinning whips your tentacles around, slows your fall and bats away bullets and torpedoes. Egg bombs drop a volley of eggs that float up and destroy what they touch. Eating in quick succession builds a combo for your score, and some kills in mid-air drop the game into slow motion.

The more people you eat, the more the town fights back. The coast guard sends helicopters that shoot while you are above water, and then the navy sends submarines with homing torpedoes. Electric eels shock and stun you while they spark, so eat them when they are calm, and a ferry takes three hits to sink. There are seven levels to pick from, from the original cove with its cliffs and floating isle to a volcano with a lava lake, and the game keeps a high score for each one.

It was made by Rory Bourdon of Pause 9. The first version came out in 2013 as a HaxeFlixel game for One Game A Month; this one is a complete rewrite for the browser in TypeScript, with the original art, sound effects and music.

Playing it here

Click Play, then press a key or click on the title screen and choose your hunting ground. Swim with WASD or the arrow keys and use Space, Q and E for the three abilities. A gamepad works too (left stick or D-pad to swim, A to lunge, B or X to spin, Y to eat with egg bombs), and on a phone or tablet you drag on the left half of the screen to swim and use the buttons on the right. Esc or P pauses, M toggles the music and F goes fullscreen. High scores are kept in your browser only; nothing is sent anywhere.

Tips

Learn the double lunge. Under the surface, lunge upwards to leap out, then lunge again at the top to reach birds, balloons and aircraft.

Swim fast on purpose. Slow contact only pushes prey around, so wind up a lunge or a spin before you meet something.

Spin against gunfire. The spin parries bullets and torpedoes, which makes the helicopters and submarines much less scary.

Leave the eels for last. An eel is safe to eat only when it is calm, not while it is sparking.

FAQ

Is there a time limit? Your rage meter is the limit: when it empties the run is over.

How many levels are there? Seven: The Cove, Arch Rock, Sky Isles, The Grotto, Needle Rocks, Coral Shallows and Fire Isle.

Can I play on a phone? Yes, with a floating touch joystick and on-screen buttons, though a keyboard or gamepad is more precise.

Is it violent? In a cartoon way: you eat people and wreck boats and aircraft, with cartoon blood splats. If that is not for you, skip this one.
