About the game
Tower Quest 3200 is an arcade auto-battler with a roguelike spine. You do not steer anything: a squad of tiny knights spawns on the left of the screen, a squad of pink enemy knights spawns on the right, and the two armies march at each other and fight it out by themselves. Your job happens in the quiet between floors.
When a floor is won, the game offers three cards and you keep one of them. Some cards add a whole new squad of knights to your army. Others make your squads bigger, make your soldiers walk faster (Coffee, which levels up as you take more of it), or widen the grid the army stands in with an extra row or column so that more squads fit in the formation. The enemy squad gets bigger with every floor, so the question is always the same: do you add more soldiers, or do you improve how your army moves and fits together?
Floor after floor the screen fills with more and more little knights. The two blobs collide, a few seconds later one side is gone, and the next choice of three cards appears. If your army is wiped out, or both armies are, a defeat screen tells you which floor you reached and lets you start a new run.
It was made by Kayh for Bevy Jam #4, as his first game jam and first full game, in Rust with the Bevy engine, and the retro look, with its pixel art, sounds and music, is all his own work. The year in the title is the date the story is set: 3200.
Playing it here
The game runs in the page and needs only a mouse. Click Click to play; the first start loads about 4 MB of game code, then the menu appears. Click Start to begin floor one and watch the battle. Sound starts with your first click. There is nothing to save: a run lasts for as long as the page is open. The browser version has no Quit button, because a web page cannot close itself; reload the page to start over.
Controls
| Input | Action |
|---|---|
| Mouse click on Start / New Game | begin a run |
| Mouse click on a reward card | take that reward and start the next floor |
Tips
Squads first, then multipliers. A squad of knights is worth more than any bonus while you have only one or two; the "Ball of Knights" card, which makes every squad half again as big, is better once you have several.
Open slots matter. Cards that add a squad or enlarge squads need a free place in the formation. When the formation is full, the Row and Column cards are what make room.
Upgrades have levels. Cards such as Coffee come back at a higher level (Coffee I, II...) once you own them, so an early pick keeps paying off over a long run.
Credits and licence
Tower Quest 3200 was made by Kayh (kayhhh on GitHub, kayh-online on itch.io). The code is released under the GNU General Public License v3, and the author's itch.io page says "All assets by me": the pictures, the sounds and the music are his own. The only exception is the pixel font VT323, by Peter Hull, under the SIL Open Font License 1.1. As the GPL asks, the source code of this build is hosted next to the game, together with the small patch we applied (a window that fits the page and no Quit button), the build script, and the licences of the Rust libraries compiled into the game.
FAQ
The game does not react to my clicks. Click on the game once so the page has the focus, and wait for the menu: the game code is a few megabytes and takes a moment to start.
Can I control the knights? No. The battle is automatic. All of your choices are made on the reward cards.
Why can't I quit? The Quit button of the desktop version is left out of the browser build. Close the tab or reload the page instead.
Is there a goal? There is no last floor: the aim is to climb as high as you can before your army is defeated, and the defeat screen shows the floor you reached.
