About the game
It is the year 2642, and word has come to King Telnor from his kinsman Angrist in the land of Vanyar. One of Angrist's vassals, Draupner, has risen in revolt, taken the northern half of the realm with the help of a dragon, and stolen the Evenstar, a priceless diamond dug from under the mountains at the beginning of time. Telnor sends you, a warrior known to be fearless and deadly, and with you goes Teleri, an elf who understands the powers that work unseen. The game begins as your ship ties up below Angrist's ivory castle.
What follows is a classic quest in the 1980s mould: a kingdom to cross, useful objects to collect, locked ways to open, a few random fights and, at the end of the road, a dragon. Teleri comes along and can be told what to do, which turns out to matter.
Johan Berntsson designed Vanyar with Mattias Geisler and programmed it in Commodore 64 BASIC in 1986. He converted it once in 2003 and again in 2026, this time with PunyInform, the library he writes with Fredrik Ramsberg. This edition removes the original's mazes, lays the map out more logically and adds many descriptions, while keeping the old-school feel.
Playing it here
Click Play now and the story starts in the player. Everything is typed: write a
command after the > prompt and press Enter. The game is in English. The
status line shows your score, out of 100, and the number of moves.
The author also publishes a version with PETSCII-style pictures and a map for
interpreters that support them. This page runs the text-only edition, so the
picture and map commands simply have nothing to show.

A few things worth knowing
Talk to Teleri with orders. You cannot chat with your companions, only
give them commands, as in teleri, give me the sword.
Some actions kill you on the spot. The game warns you first, and undo
always takes the move back, so read the warnings.
Fights are random. If a battle goes badly, undo and try again, and keep
an eye on anything that might make you stronger.
Draw a map. The land is bigger than it first looks, and exits saves a lot
of guessing.
The help menu contains the solution. It is there if you need it, but the first two pages are only the author's notes and the instructions.
