About the game

Warden's Duty starts with a letter. The prison you have just been put in charge of has a problem: every cell is occupied, and what lives in them is not friendly. Your job is to empty the cells, one prisoner at a time, and then move on to the next floor, where there are more cells and tougher inmates.

Each floor is a small grid of cells. You never run around a map swinging at things: you step onto a cell, the screen turns to a close-up of the creature inside, and the two of you trade turns. Below the creature you see its bars (health, mana, arrows, strength, magic affinity, gold, experience and your resistances to fire, water and poison), and beside it a short list of attacks you can pick from. A melee attack is always there; a magic missile, a bow and breath attacks of different elements turn up depending on who is fighting. Between the fights there are chests (some of them trapped), traps, shopkeepers and other surprises, and a small minimap shows the layout of the floor.

The game is a seven-day roguelike, written in a hurry in 2015, and it says so in its own introduction: expect goblins, rats, dragons, pangolins and maybe a lutefisk, and a few rough edges. That is part of the charm. When you finally lose, it adds up how many levels you went down and how much gold you collected.

Playing it here

Click Play, then press Enter on the title page. A short letter explains the first level, which has a single cell and a single goblin. After that it is up to you. Fights are decided with the keyboard only, and the page is laid out for a wide window, so if the cells look squeezed, give the player more width.

Nothing is saved: every run starts from the first floor.

A few things worth knowing

Read both sets of bars. The creature's numbers and your own are shown together; a strong enemy is not always a bad fight if you have the right resistance or the right attack for it.

Arrows and mana run out. The bow and the spells are limited, so save them for the cells where a plain melee attack would cost too much health.

Not every cell has to be a fight. Chests, shops and traps are worth thinking about before you walk into them, because the prison gets harder the deeper you go.
