About the game

Castle of Viana: Capiroto's Revenge is a side-view action platformer drawn in the four colours of an IBM PC CGA card: black, magenta, cyan and white. It was made for the CGA Jam of 2017, whose theme was "history repeats itself", and the story takes that literally. A castle floats above Viana do Castelo, a town in the north of Portugal, and the demon Capiroto (an old Portuguese nickname for the devil) has come back to ravage the land once more. Your job is to climb to the top and destroy him, again.

The castle is a stack of single-screen rooms. Skeletons walk the floors, gargoyles guard the passages, lava fills the pits and some rooms only open once you pick up the key that opens their doors. A sword deals with the skeletons up close, a bow deals with everything else, and arrows can also be shot straight up. Health comes back with the pieces of meat left lying around, and each boss fight shows the demon's remaining strength on screen.

Playing it here

This is the official DOS release, version 2.1, running in DOSBox. The game normally starts by asking which sound and video drivers to use; here it skips the questions and starts with AdLib music and the original CGA graphics, so you go straight to the title screen. The game is in English and has no save: each run starts from the first room.

Controls

Key Action
Left / Right walk
Up / Down climb or descend stairs
Up (on the ground) shoot an arrow straight up
Z jump
X shoot an arrow
C or Space swing the sword
Enter start the game, pause
Esc quit the game

A few things worth knowing

One arrow at a time. A new arrow only leaves the bow once the previous one has hit something or left the screen, so a miss costs you a moment.

Arrows for the big ones. The sword hits twice as hard as an arrow, but it only hurts skeletons. Gargoyles, the demons and their hands only take arrows.

Eat the meat. A piece of meat restores your health to full. If your health is already full, it stays where it is for later.

Lower-case keys. The game reads the letters Z, X and C as typed, so turn Caps Lock off if they stop responding.

Esc really quits. It closes the game instead of opening a menu; use Enter to pause.

Credits and licence

Castle of Viana was programmed by Daniel "MontyOnTheRun" Monteiro, who also wrote its sound, with art by Pedro Fernandes. The game is released under the BSD 2-clause licence, and the author confirmed that the art is covered too. The tunes on the title and victory screens are Beethoven's "Ode to Joy". The game is on itch.io and its source code on GitHub. The author's other DOS game on this site is Dungeons of Noudar 3D.
