About the game
o.l.e.s.a. is a puzzle game played on a grid, one step at a time. Every room is a small maze of white blocks on a dark background, with a few round resources, some tables and doors, and a handful of little figures that you control. Nothing happens until you move, and nothing moves unless you tell it to, so every room can be solved by thinking, not by reflexes.
The figures are not all the same. One of them can carry things, another can build with what it finds, and a room often asks you to get two of them to cooperate. Along the walls you will also find rows of tiny symbols. They are written in sitelen pona, the picture script of the constructed language toki pona, and they are part of how the game talks to you. You do not need to read them to play, but the more you recognise, the more the rooms make sense. The game was made for a jam whose theme was "secrets", and it keeps a few.
It is short, calm and very clean to look at. The sound is a soft set of clicks and chimes, with slow ambient music in the background, and the pixel art uses only two colours at a time.
Playing it here
Click Play and wait a moment while the game loads (about 20 MB, downloaded only when you press the button). Click inside the game once so that it gets the keyboard. The first rooms teach the controls with short messages at the top of the screen. Your progress is saved in this browser, so you can close the page and come back to the room where you stopped.
There is a hold-down repeat on the movement keys, and every step can be undone, so mistakes cost nothing. The game needs a keyboard to play comfortably.
Controls
| Input | Action |
|---|---|
| W, A, S, D or the arrow keys | move one step |
| Tab | switch to the next character |
| U | undo the last step |
| R | restart the room |
| C | change the colour palette |
| N / P | go to the next / previous room |
Tips
Undo freely. U takes back a step, so try ideas first and think afterwards.
Look at the symbols. The rows of small pictures are not decoration; the same ones come back from room to room.
Switch characters often. If a room looks stuck, the figure you are not controlling may be the one that can move forward.
Change the colours. C cycles through several palettes. Pick the one that is easiest on your eyes; it does not change the puzzles.
FAQ
Do I need to know toki pona? No. The game is playable without it, and the symbols are introduced gradually.
Does it work on a phone? The game has touch controls, but this page is made for a keyboard, so the best experience is on a computer.
Is it free to share? Yes. The code is free software under the MIT licence, the artwork is under CC BY 4.0, and the licences of the sounds, music and font are listed below.
